Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about our privacy compliance tool.

Is this legal advice?

No. ClearConsent is an automated scanning and educational tool. It detects trackers, cookies, and privacy signals on your website and scores them against known state privacy laws. It does not replace a qualified attorney. Our reports are informational only and should be used as a starting point for your compliance efforts, not as a definitive legal assessment.

Which privacy laws do you cover?

We currently cover 21 privacy laws: 19 US state privacy laws enacted through 2026 (including California CCPA/CPRA, Virginia VCDPA, Colorado CPA, Connecticut CTDPA, Texas TDPSA, Oregon OCPA, and newer laws in Indiana, Kentucky, and Rhode Island), plus the EU's GDPR and Canada's PIPEDA. We update our law database as new legislation takes effect. See our Laws page for the full list.

How accurate are the compliance scores?

Scores are based on what we can detect automatically: trackers, cookies, privacy policy presence, cookie banners, GPC support, and "Do Not Sell" links. Many compliance requirements depend on your internal business practices (data retention policies, employee training, vendor agreements) that a website scan can't observe. Think of your score as a floor — your actual compliance may be higher.

What do paid plans include?

All paid plans include the same features:

  • Deep JS scanning — catches hidden trackers loaded by JavaScript and tag managers
  • PDF compliance reports — shareable, branded reports for clients or stakeholders
  • Privacy policy generator — tailored to your scan results
  • Cookie consent banner — blocks tracking scripts until visitors give consent
  • Domain tracking — automatic weekly re-scans with score drop alerts
  • 90-day scan history — track compliance improvements over time

Plans differ only by the number of domains you can monitor: Solo (1), Pro (3), Business (15), Agency (50).

Do you store my website data?

We store the scan results (detected trackers, cookies, and compliance scores) so you can access them from your dashboard. We do not store your website's actual content, source code, or any visitor data. Scan results are retained for up to 2 years for your records, after which they are permanently deleted.

Scanning & Features

What's the difference between a basic scan and a deep scan?

Basic scan (free) analyzes your page's HTML source code to detect trackers, cookies, and privacy signals from the initial page load.

Deep scan (paid) uses a headless browser to fully render your page, including JavaScript. This catches trackers loaded by tag managers like Google Tag Manager, late-loading advertising pixels, and cookies set by client-side scripts that basic scans miss.

How does the cookie consent banner work?

The ClearConsent cookie banner is a lightweight JavaScript snippet you add to your site. It displays a consent popup to visitors and actually blocks tracking scripts (like Google Analytics, Meta Pixel, etc.) until the visitor gives consent. Scripts are controlled via a data-cc-category attribute — you tag each script as analytics, advertising, or essential, and the banner handles the rest.

For most users, installing the banner and a privacy policy is all you need. A step-by-step setup guide is included in your dashboard after you generate a banner.

Does the banner handle EU visitors differently?

Yes. ClearConsent automatically detects visitors from the EU, EEA, and UK and switches to opt-in consent mode for those visitors, as required by GDPR. All tracking is blocked until they explicitly accept. US and other visitors see your configured consent mode (opt-in or opt-out). This happens automatically at the network edge — no configuration needed.

Do you have a Shopify app?

Yes. ClearConsent is available as a Shopify app. Install it from the Shopify App Store and everything is handled inside your Shopify admin — scanning, privacy policy generation, and cookie banner installation. The banner is automatically added to your storefront, so there's no code to copy or paste. Billing goes through Shopify so it appears on your existing Shopify invoice.

Can I cancel my subscription anytime?

Yes. You can cancel anytime from your Dashboard via the "Manage Subscription" link, which takes you to the Stripe customer portal. Your access continues until the end of your current billing period. No long-term contracts, no cancellation fees.
