Quick answers about
ClearConsent.
What it scans, how the score is built, what's included in each plan, how setup and billing work, and what happens when you uninstall. If something's missing, ask directly.
The diagnostic, the score, the laws.
Do I need to install the app to run a scan?
No. Run a public diagnostic scan from clearconsent.app without installing anything — you'll see your compliance score, the trackers detected, and which privacy laws apply to your traffic. Installing the Shopify app turns that scan into a fix list: generated privacy policy, configured banner with auto-blocking, weekly re-scans, and PDF + Excel reports for audits and legal review.
Is this legal advice?
No. ClearConsent is an automated scanning and educational tool. It detects trackers, cookies, and privacy signals on your store and scores them against known privacy laws. It does not replace a qualified attorney. Reports are informational only and should be used as a starting point for compliance, not as a definitive legal assessment.
Which privacy laws do you cover?
Active US state privacy laws include California CCPA/CPRA, Virginia VCDPA, Colorado CPA, Connecticut CTDPA, Texas TDPSA, Oregon OCPA, and newer laws in Indiana, Kentucky, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Maryland, and more.
The EU's GDPR and Canada's PIPEDA are also covered. The law database is reviewed and updated as new legislation comes into effect.
How accurate are the compliance scores?
Your compliance score combines three layers:
- Scanner findings — trackers, cookies, banner, GPC, and "Do Not Sell" links detected on your store.
- Deployed artifacts — when ClearConsent generates your privacy policy and configures your banner, the compliance features they provide are verified automatically.
- Business practices — questions about your internal processes you confirm in the Compliance tab.
The privacy-policy portion of the score is graded for topic coverage by an AI model (Anthropic's Claude). Per Anthropic's commercial terms, the policy text we send is not used to train models. See the sub-processor list for details.
Per-law scores reflect all three. See how scoring works for the full breakdown.
What does the Pro plan include?
Pro turns the scan into a full compliance workflow: an auto-blocker that holds common tracking scripts (GA4, GTM, Meta Pixel, TikTok Pixel) until the visitor consents, a generated and section-editable privacy policy hosted on your store, a customizable banner with GDPR geo-targeting and Google Consent Mode v2, consent analytics, weekly re-scans, PDF + Excel reports for audits and legal review, and one-year scan history. The cookie banner is translated into 15 languages auto-detected from your store locale.
See the full pricing page for the side-by-side comparison.
How is the Free plan different from Pro?
The Free plan shows your diagnostic results and deploys a basic cookie consent banner so visitors get something compliant on day one. Clean stores typically land in the high 80s to low 90s; closing the final gap to 100 comes from the Pro privacy-policy tools. Pro unlocks the full fix workflow: a tracker-aware privacy policy that names the actual scripts found on your store and covers GDPR/CCPA-required disclosure terms, the auto-blocker that holds trackers until consent, PDF + Excel reports for audits and legal review, weekly re-scans, and one-year scan history. Free shows you where the gaps are; Pro is the toolkit that closes them.
Can I edit the generated privacy policy?
Yes. ClearConsent generates an editable privacy policy template based on your scan results, detected services, and selected compliance settings. Inside the app you can edit narrative sections — company intro, contact information, data-sharing practices, children's privacy, and more — before publishing or pushing updates to your store.
The generated policy is designed to help merchants get started. It is not legal advice and should be reviewed by a qualified legal professional before you rely on it as your published legal text.
What happens if I edit a policy section?
The policy editor marks tracker, cookie, and law-specific sections as Auto-updated — ClearConsent keeps these in sync with what the scanner finds. Narrative sections (company intro, contact details, data practices, children's privacy, etc.) are editable; once you save changes to one, it gets a Customized badge so ClearConsent won't silently overwrite your wording the next time the policy regenerates.
If you ever want to go back to the managed version of a customized section, click Reset on that section and ClearConsent will restore the latest auto-generated template.
What languages are supported?
The Pro cookie banner is available in 15 languages — English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Polish, Danish, Swedish, Finnish, Greek, Czech, Romanian, and Hungarian — auto-detected from your Shopify store locale, with no configuration needed.
The privacy policy generates in English. PDF and Excel compliance reports are available in 15 languages, auto-detected from your store locale (with an English option).
Do you store my website data?
We do not permanently store your store's full page content, source code, customer profiles, or order data. Scan results (detected trackers, cookies, compliance scores) and Pro consent records are stored so you can access reports, score history, and the audit log from your dashboard. Scan results and consent records are retained for up to 1 year, after which they are permanently deleted. Full data details in the Data Processing Addendum.
What if I need help?
Support is handled by the ClearConsent team — no ticket queues, no scripted responses. Use the contact form and we'll respond, typically within one business day. Full response targets in the support policy.
Install, configure, cancel.
How does the setup work?
After installing from the Shopify App Store and choosing a plan, ClearConsent runs an automatic setup: it scans your store, generates and hosts a privacy policy page, and configures your cookie consent banner. Most stores complete the in-app portion in under a minute — no code to write.
One final step: after the wizard finishes, you'll open Shopify's Theme Editor and toggle the ClearConsent app embed on, then click Save. This makes the banner live on your storefront.
How does the cookie banner get installed?
ClearConsent uses Shopify's theme app extension — the install method Shopify requires under app policy 5.1.1. No theme-file injection, no code to copy or paste. After the in-app wizard finishes, you'll open Shopify's Theme Editor, toggle the ClearConsent app embed on, click Save, and the banner is live.
If you later switch themes, just toggle ClearConsent on in the new theme — no re-install needed.
Will uninstalling leave anything behind in my theme?
No theme files are modified. ClearConsent is delivered through Shopify's theme app extension — it doesn't inject ScriptTags or write to your theme's Liquid files. When you uninstall, Shopify stops serving the extension and the banner disappears from your storefront. The ClearConsent toggle in your Theme Editor's App embeds panel remains as a cosmetic entry (Shopify won't serve extensions from uninstalled apps, so it has no effect) — you can clear it from Online Store → Themes → Customize → App embeds → Save if you prefer a clean theme settings list.
Does the banner handle EU visitors differently?
Yes. ClearConsent uses visitor-region detection to switch EU, EEA, and UK visitors to opt-in consent mode (the GDPR/ePrivacy default). US visitors (including California under CCPA/CPRA) see opt-out mode instead. No configuration needed.
Does ClearConsent automatically block GA, Meta Pixel, and other trackers?
Yes. The Pro plan includes an auto-blocker that prevents tracking scripts from running until visitors consent. Configure your IDs once in Settings > Script Management inside the app — we support Google Analytics (GA4), Google Tag Manager, Meta Pixel, and TikTok Pixel out of the box, plus a broader URL-pattern blocker that catches common tracker domains.
How does the 7-day Pro trial work?
Pro starts with a 7-day free trial; you're only charged at the end if you stay on Pro. You can cancel any time during the trial from the Account tab inside the app or from Shopify admin under Settings → Apps and sales channels — access continues until the trial ends.
Trial eligibility is handled natively by Shopify on a 180-day rolling window per store. If your store has already used a ClearConsent trial in the last 180 days, Shopify will transition you straight to standard Pro billing on upgrade rather than offering a second trial.
How does billing work?
Billing is handled entirely through Shopify. Charges appear on your regular Shopify invoice alongside your other app charges. Change or cancel your plan from the Account tab in the app, or through Shopify admin under Settings → Apps and sales channels. Your access continues until the end of your current billing period.
Can I cancel anytime?
Yes. Cancel at any time from your Shopify admin under Settings → Apps and sales channels, or from the Account tab inside the app. No long-term contracts, no cancellation fees. Your access continues until the end of your current billing period.
What happens if my trial ends or I downgrade from Pro to Free?
The app stays installed and your saved settings aren't deleted. Pro-only features (auto-blocker, tracker-aware policy serving, weekly rescans, reports) stop running, and ClearConsent falls back to the basic Free banner experience. Your previous Pro banner design and generated privacy policy are saved in your account — if you upgrade again later, both can be restored without repeating setup.
Downgrade is scheduled, not immediate. Shopify keeps your subscription active through the rest of the billing period you already paid for; the change takes effect at period end. Before you confirm cancellation, you'll choose what happens to your privacy policy at period end (Export to Shopify Page, Download as PDF, or Leave the policy as-is).
What happens if I uninstall the app?
When you uninstall, the app stops running on your storefront and your Shopify subscription is cancelled through Shopify. ClearConsent marks the store as uninstalled and removes access to app features. App data may be retained briefly to support accidental-reinstall recovery, but required data is deleted or redacted according to Shopify's privacy webhook requirements (the shop/redact webhook fires approximately 48 hours after uninstall).
About your privacy policy page: if ClearConsent created a Shopify privacy policy page during setup, the page URL stays live (so shoppers and search engines that linked to it don't 404) with the body replaced by a generic placeholder template plus a footer linking to two next-step options: install Shopify's built-in policy generator under Settings → Legal → Privacy, or resubscribe to ClearConsent to restore the auto-updating tracker-aware version. You can delete the page entirely from Shopify admin if you prefer.
Before uninstalling: consent logs may be required for compliance audits. Export them from the dashboard if you want to keep them.
What happens if I reinstall shortly after uninstalling?
If you reinstall before ClearConsent's app data has been deleted or redacted, your previous configuration may be restored automatically. If you were on Pro and your paid billing period is still active, Pro is restored with the remaining paid time intact. Otherwise you'll land on Free with your previous Pro setup saved in the background — available to restore the moment you re-upgrade.
If the data has already been deleted or redacted, the reinstall is treated as a fresh setup.
Can I run ClearConsent alongside another consent app?
No — you should only use one cookie consent solution at a time. Running two consent banners simultaneously will confuse visitors with duplicate popups, may cause conflicting consent signals (including Google Consent Mode), and can lead to compliance issues. If you're switching from another provider, uninstall their app and remove any leftover scripts from your theme before setting up ClearConsent.
Can I manage multiple Shopify stores?
Yes. Each Shopify store installs its own copy of the app with its own subscription. Each installation covers one store. For multiple stores, install the app on each one separately.
